Buckyballs・バッキーボール

I cannot believe it. The favorite desk toy of mine, as of many many others, had been discontinued. I lost mine somewhere, and now I cannot get it any longer, which makes me quite sad...

みんなに大人気のオフィス用オモチャ（というたぐいの小物が、アメリカなどではいろいろとあるのです）、バッキーボールが、製造・販売中止になってしまったそうです。私は、引っ越しの途中で失くしてしまったのですが、もう手に入らないのですね．．．。ああ、残念です。

Buckyballs, for those who did not have the chance to play with them, are small magnetic balls. That's it. But then they offer an infinite amount of fun, since you can do so much with it. You can make shapes of all kinds. If you are a nerdy biologist, you can make biological-looking structures, which resemble microtubules for example. Me? I would make a sheet and stretch it, saying in my mind "Membrane!" Yeah, fine, I am a nerd. (But then the membrane phospholipids are just like those magnets - they are attracting each other...)

バッキーボールを知らない方に何なのかをご説明しますと、単に小さな磁石のボールであります。それだけです。シンプルな商品ですが、それ故に限りなく楽しめてしまうのです。とにかくいろいろな形を作ることが出来ます。特に科学者（特に数学者・化学者・物理学者）ははまること間違いなしです。生物学者だって、簡単に生体内の構造体（例えば微小管）に似たものが出来たりするので、面白いのですよ。ちなみに私は平面体をつくって両側から引っ張り伸長させては「細胞膜〜！」と心の中でつぶやいておりました。はい、どうしようもない科学オタクです、わかっております。（細胞内の膜は、構造ユニットのリン脂質分子がちょうど磁石のように引かれ合ってできているのです。）

Apparently there are some incidents of people swallowing pieces of Buckyballs, and they are dangerous to swallow, since they are hard to come out the body and will interfere with medical exams (such as MRI). I guess it was enough reason to make the Consumer Agency nervous. Even still though, I wish I could get more of it while I could. It was a medium we could really get creative with....!

なんでも、バッキーボールの粒を飲み込んでしまうと、なかなか取り出せない上にMRIなどの検査に支障がでるとのこと。そのような事故が何件か発生した末、廃盤が決定したそうです。分からなくもないですが、ああ、手に入れられるうちにもっと買っておけば良かった、と後悔しています。本当に創造性を触発してくれるいい媒体だったのですよ。（注意： 日本ではまだ類似商品が手に入るようです。入手の際は、小さなお子さんなどからは遠ざけ、お気をつけてお遊びください。）

Make your gloves smart phone compatible・スマートフォン対応の手袋をつくる

It is cold. Freezing in fact. But your phone rings. Maybe an important call. But you don't want to take off your gloves. Well you can take your call with your favorite gloves on; you can modify them tiny bit to make them smart-phone compatible. Get a conductive thread (e.g. you can find on here) and saw something where the tips of index finger and thumb are.

寒いです。凍てつく寒さです。それでも、携帯が鳴ります。もしかしたら重要な電話かもしれない。でも、手袋を外すのには寒すぎる！そんなときに、お気に入りの手袋をつけたままでスマートフォンが使えるようにする工夫。手袋に導電糸で刺繍を少しするだけで良いのです。（導電糸はこちらなどで手に入ります。）

Of course there are many smart phone compatible gloves sold out there. So this is a solution for crafty minds and people who just love their non-conductive gloves so much. And below is a video on how you can do it. A tip is to cover the inner tip areas of the thumb and index finger parts as much as possible.

もちろん、スマートフォン用の導電手袋はたくさん売られているので、これは工作好きかお気に入りの手袋がどうしても手放せない人向けの対策です。作り方は下の動画でご覧ください（英語の解説のみですが、観るだけで何となく分かると思います）。ポイントとしては、親指と人差し指の先に出来るだけ広範囲に広がる縫い付けをした方がよいようです。

Fabric Christmas tree・布のクリスマスツリー

It's already deep into the Christmas time. I wish I could have a real tree, I came across a wonderful alternative that almost as effective! IKEA sells Christmas trees on cloth! The fabric is called MARGARETA.

もうすっかりクリスマスの季節ですね。やっぱり本物の木のクリスマスツリーが一番雰囲気があると思いますが、なかなか便利でいい感じの代わり、布のクリスマスツリーをIKEAで見つけましたよ。MARGARETAという商品です。

Incidentally, they also sell real (relatively) large Christmas trees in Japan (they are some of the few places where one can find them, and they also collect used ones for free).

ところで、IKEAでは本格的な大きさの本物のクリスマスツリーも割と良心的な値段で売られています。（そして、無料で回収もしてくれるようです。いいサービスですね！）

KIRIN water bottles・KIRINの水のパッケージ

Doesn't it make you happy when things that just get into your sight no matter what happen to be well designed? These water bottles wrapped in simple yet cool labels are examples of such 'great everyday design'! KIRIN (a Japanese beverage company) made these to pack soft natural water from Tsumagoi Village. They are made exclusively for Amazon.co.jp!

視界にそれとなく入ってくるもののデザインがいいと、毎日がちょっとうれしくなります。
そんなグッド・エブリデイ・デザインのひとつが、このKIRINが売りだした水です。
嬬恋村の軟らかい自然水がボトルになってシンプルで涼し気なラベルにくるまって登場しました。Amazon.co.jp限定だそうです。

Itoi Shigesato Office・糸井重里事務所

Tokyo Itoi Shigesato Office is an interesting company. They run a website called “Hobo-Nikkan Itoi Shinbun (Nearly Daily Newspaper by Itoi),” which actually is daily and has not missed a day since it started back in 1998, when internet was still a novelty in Japan. (Unfortunately, it is only in Japansese so far. Let's hope that the contents will be at least partially available in English in future!)

株式会社東京糸井重里事務所は、おもしろい会社だ。「ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞」という、実は休むことなく日刊している情報ウェブサイトを、インターネットなんてまだ珍しかった１９９８年から運営している。

The president Shigesato Itoi is a well-known copy writer in Japan, who has invented many famous expression like “Kuu, Neru, Asobu (Eat, Sleep, Play)” or “Oishii Seikatsu (Delicious Life).” He also wrote copies for the movies from Stadio Ghibli and even did the voice for a character in My Neighbor Totoro (he voiced the father of the two heroines). The popular website publishes a new essay from Itoi every day. It also uploads numerous fun, sometimes silly and some other times serious, contents, which are all distributed free of charge. Many involve readers’ participation; for example, recently there was a 12-week event for readers to try out a simple dessert recipe and share their photos every week.

糸井重里は「くうねるあそぶ」や「おいしい生活」など、誰もが耳にしたことがあるフレーズの創り主。そんな彼が、毎日その日にしか読めないエッセイを載せているだけでなく、おもしろくて時々真剣な企画が盛りだくさん、すべて無料で配信されている。読者参加型の読み物も多い。最近では、１２週間にわたって毎週お菓子レシピを発表、読者が完成品の写真をシェアーする企画（「ちいさなレシピを１ダース」）があった。

In addition to their company stuffs, celebrities (actors, writers, poets, movie directors, etc.) contribute to the newspaper for their own series or interviews. Even though the company don’t pay those participants, it attracts people other companies would try hard (also financially) to get (e.g. the Harvard political philosopher Michael Sandel and the Japanese actress Yuriko Ishida). The newspaper introduces yet unknown artists, craftsmen, and musicians, as well as movies and cultural events.

社員（乗組員というらしい）に加えて、いろいろな文化人、芸能人も独自のコンテンツやインタビューに参加しているけれど、ギャラはないらしい。それでも、参加者は他の会社がどれだけ金銭的に頑張ってでも誘いたがるような人たちだったりする（例：ハーバード白熱教室のマイケル・サンデルや女優の石田ゆり子など）。まだ無名のアーティスト、工芸家やミュージシャンの紹介もしているし、映画やイベントなどのお知らせやリポートもする。

The more I hear about the company, the more surprised I am. Every Tuesday, they have a home-made lunch together (which the employees look forward to for the entire week, apparently). Every 4 years on Februally 29^th, they are supposed to do something else than work to enjoy ‘the extra day.’ Every year, they are obliged to take longer than 5-day vacation (a rare rule especially in Japan). They change their seating charts twice a year to mix up interactions. There is a pet fugu in the office, which you can see any time through the dedicated webcam. The president Itoi sometimes cook beef curry out of his legendary secret recipe for all his employees. Seriously, is it a dream company or what?

こんな会社があるんだ、と、知れば知るほど思う。毎週火曜日は、手作りの給食が昼に支給され（社員は心待ちにしているらしい）、４年に一度の２月２９日は、「おまけの日」なのだから何か仕事以外のことをしなくてはいけないきまりだとか。一年に一回は５日以上連続の休暇をとらなくてはいけないという、（日本では特に）めずらしい掟もあるそうな。年に二回席替えもするらしい。オフィスにはペットのふぐがいてライブカムでいつでも観察できたり、社長が自慢の秘伝レシピのカレーを作って社員全員に振る舞ったり。

Sometimes I also wonder how they can get by as a company, all those free services. Their site rarely lists promotions or ads from other companies, and so they must to be supported sorely by the sales of their books and goods. They develop and sell items that are something they themselves would want to have and have been looking for. As the result, they sell all sorts of rather random items, such as seeds of rare plants, coffee, towels, hand fan, breast/belly protectors, ceramic pots, and so on. And yes, those items are rather expensive, too, but they are all of good quality and well thought out and designed. (Please see the two promotional videos to get some idea.) I have gotten some, as thanks to the everyday enjoyment I get out of their newspaper, and I thought I didn’t need any other reasons than the goods themselves.

どうやったらこんな無料奉仕しまくりな会社がやっていけるのか、と、不思議にも思う。宣伝もほとんど皆無なので、収入は物品や書籍の開発・販売から得ているらしい。自分たちも「こういうものが欲しい、こういうものがあればいいのに」と思える商品を企画して作る。その結果、売っているものは珍しい花の種、コーヒー、扇子、タオル、はらまき、土鍋、など不思議な組み合わせの数々だけれど、どれも凝りに凝った質のよいものらしい（そのかわり、結構値が張るものもある）。私も、いつも楽しませてもらっているお礼に、といくつか購入したことがあるけれど、理由なんてなくても商品そのもので充分に満足な買い物でした。大抵は完売御礼のようです。

Techo (agenda) is the representative of their products. Many Japanese people even think Hobo-nichi (which is how the company is nicknamed) is a notebook company. Their agenda, although pretty sleek, has one page per day, and they use special paper that is easy to write on. Agendas that are easy to use and carry, that’s what they seem to be trying to achieve. It is about time to look for planner for Year 2013, and I am thinking of using Hobo-nichi’s for the first time. This year, they start selling English version, too.

そんな商品の中でも、手帳はよく知られている。ほぼ日刊イトイ新聞こと「ほぼ日」といったら手帳の会社だと思っている人も多いはず。一日一ページ、たくさん書き込めるわりにかさばらない、書きやすくて持ち運びやすい。毎日を一緒に過ごしたくなるような手帳を目指しているらしい。そろそろ来年の手帳を探すシーズンですね。私も今年はほぼ日手帳を使ってみたいと思います。そうそう、今年（２０１３年度）からは英語版も出ているそう。

I have also wondered how one can run a company like that. Itoi has said he is following these words of his friend and teacher Takaaki Yoshimoto (a famous thinker of Post-Modern Japan, by the way also the father of the writer Banana Yoshimoto), who said in response to the question “What is a good company?”: “If the office is nice and sunny and situated inside a nice building in a nice area, where there are some places to have tea and some other things around, then wouldn’t you want to go there every day?” It made sense to me. The company is located in Omote-Sando (a cultural center of Tokyo), and the office looks sunny and comfortable with nice woody interior.

どうやったらこんな会社が作れるのだろう、と思ったこともある。糸井重里は、どうやら吉本隆明のこの言葉にそって会社を運営しているみたいです。「いい会社とは？」との問に返して、「いい場所にいい建物があって、日当たりが良くてさ、近所にお茶を飲んだりできるところがあったら、毎日来てやってもいいやって思いますよね。」なんとなく、納得。糸井重里事務所は、東京は表参道にある、木の内装が心地よさそうな日当たりが良さそうなところです。

Sugru・スグル

When I was looking for a gripper for my minimally designed, sleek and slippy, camera, I couldn't find any that was appealing. I thought, "it would be so nice if I could just make it myself with clay." But of course, you cannot use any clay (for one, it would not stick to plastic surface). Then I found Sugru.

私のカメラはとてもミニマルなデザインなので、すっきりしているのですが持ちにくいのです。いい取手が付属品でないかと探してみたのですが、なかなか気に入るものが見つかりません。「粘土みたいなもので、自分で作れたらいいのに」なんて考えてみても、普通の粘土で良いわけでもなく。そんな時に、Sugru（スグル）を見つけました。

Sugru is a new kind of clay-like material. It is made of silicon rubber and bonds to most surfaces (glass, plastics, wood, etc.). It cures in 24 hours to a tough (yet bouncy and soft to touch) mass that can hold a lot of weight... It comes in black, white, and all the primary colors, and so you can mix to make any color you want. And more - it is stable at high temperatures, and you can even remove it later.

スグルは、新しく開発された粘土のような材料です。シリコン ゴムでできていて、ガラスやプラスチックや木材など、いろいろな表面に接着します。空気中で２４時間で固まるのですが、一度固まると、触ると柔らかいものの、かなり重いものも持ち上げられるくらい強固になります。白黒と三原色を混ぜて好きな色を作ることができるうえ、高温にも対応可能で、時間がたってから剥がすこともできる、という便利な優れもの。

 

You can make anything with it, and fix or add special touch of your own to any mass-produced items. I got a lot of ideas looking through what other people made with Sugru.

これを使って、いろいろな物を直したりアレンジしたりできるのです。使用例やスグルの作品集をみていると、アイデアが多岐多様でおもしろい！

By the way, I wasn't the only one thinking of making a gripper for a camera, it seems!

As intriguing as the product itself is the story behind development of Sugru. It started when an art student     Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh wished of such materials and start making one. She really took it to another level and collaborated with materials scientists and even made a laboratory at home to invent the new kind of material. During her 5 year effort, investors were supporting the project, but then there was the dreadful economy crisis that hit Ireland hard... But once it became available to the market, though, the rest was a history. It was really entrepreneurs' dream come true. In the video below, the creator explains how Sugru works!
