Vol. 1

It was several years ago, just about this time of a year, when spring was sprung in the temperate countries in the northern hemisphere, like Japan and USA. In Helsinki, Finland, the shoes and rivers were still frozen. It was my first trip to Helsinki, and I had only a few days to explore; so I had to prioritize. But,  as a huge fan of the father of Finnish design Alvar Aalto, I could not miss visiting his house (which is kept as a private museum).

I was the only visitor for the hour, so they gave me a private tour and afterward let me explore on my own. (Yes!) He made the house when he was still a young and start-up architect in the area, which was considered a far end of the city (at that time), on a very tight budget. This house was his experiment, showcase, and grand collection of his motto to create something everyone can afford. He loved the place dearly and spent most of his life there, together with two much loved wives. It was a full life - you can feel it there in his house.

In this post, I will post photos of the office/studio part of the house.

Aalto liked this corner of the house. His desk was permanently placed here - not in the office room.

Desks of his workers. The pictures were painted by Aalto. The upper floor was for the newbies. They had to start there by sharpening hundreds of pencils a day. (laugh)

This room was supposed to be his office, but he didn't like it, apparently. Instead, his wife and fellow designer Aino used it.

This is a secret door to the 2nd floor of the house. When he was too busy or overwhelmed, he would sneak out of the work place from this door to the balcony.

A collection of bits and pieces. Some were dug up during construction of the house, and others were taken up on trips to all over the world.

To be continued in Vol. 2...

Fabric Christmas tree

It's already deep into the Christmas time. I wish I could have a real tree, I came across a wonderful alternative that almost as effective! IKEA sells Christmas trees on cloth! The fabric is called MARGARETA.

Incidentally, they also sell real (relatively) large Christmas trees in Japan (they are some of the few places where one can find them, and they also collect used ones for free).

Sugru

When I was looking for a gripper for my minimally designed, sleek and slippy, camera, I couldn't find any that was appealing. I thought, "it would be so nice if I could just make it myself with clay." But of course, you cannot use any clay (for one, it would not stick to plastic surface). Then I found Sugru.

そんな時に、Sugru(スグル)を見つけました。

Sugru is a new kind of clay-like material. It is made of silicon rubber and bonds to most surfaces (glass, plastics, wood, etc.). It cures in 24 hours to a tough (yet bouncy and soft to touch) mass that can hold a lot of weight... It comes in black, white, and all the primary colors, and so you can mix to make any color you want. And more - it is stable at high temperatures, and you can even remove it later.

You can make anything with it, and fix or add special touch of your own to any mass-produced items. I got a lot of ideas looking through what other people made with Sugru.

By the way, I wasn't the only one thinking of making a gripper for a camera, it seems!

As intriguing as the product itself is the story behind development of Sugru. It started when an art student     Jane Ní Dhulchaointigh wished of such materials and start making one. She really took it to another level and collaborated with materials scientists and even made a laboratory at home to invent the new kind of material. During her 5 year effort, investors were supporting the project, but then there was the dreadful economy crisis that hit Ireland hard... But once it became available to the market, though, the rest was a history. It was really entrepreneurs' dream come true. In the video below, the creator explains how Sugru works!

Sugru means 'play' in Irish. Great name that is. For more information, please go to: http://sugru.com/about. If you would like to order some Sugru, please go to: https://sugru.com/buy. They ship worldwide.

I first came across Black + Blum as designers of this beautiful candle holder. It is called "Loop," and the foot of the candle holder is the Golden Spiral (= the equiangular spiral).

Black + Blum

This design studio have offered many simple and humorous creations, which are pleasing to our eyes and minds! Here is a salad server set. The pot part is a dressing mixing bowl.

Here are potato mashers inspired by ski sticks!

Water bottles with a stick of charcol inside (which purifies the water), and no the stick does not come out thanks to the clever design!

For more information, please visit their official website  www.black-blum.com or take a look of their introductory video. I want to visit the office one day!

Subway in Stockholm

Stockholm is the largest city in Scandinavia with 850,000 inhabitants (2 million in the metropolitan area). The city consists of several islands and lakes. It is urban but at the same time close to nature; in other words, it sure looks like a nice place to live. Pretty reliable public transportation, which is rare to find globally speaking, covers the entire city well, and so it is easy to walk around and explore.

It is expensive, though. The subway fare starts from $5-6! Scandinavia is expensive; the reputation is correct. “It is a downside of living in Stockholm.” I said, and a friend of mine who lives there replied that there are super discounted passes for residents of the city. Ah, that makes sense.

But it is worthy of going underground for another reason: art. Some lines made each station into artistic canvas, and I hopped on and off the vehicle at several stops. I did not fully get the concepts of some of the installments, but some others made me want to use them as everyday hub.

I was particularly impressed by this one. The wall is covered with all sorts of colors in bright pastel tones. There are maps and timeline figures, on histories of world civilizations in parallel.

And the events are marked in different colors, depending on the cultural regions! So neatly done. It does tickle soft spots of history and geography lovers!
