Tiny Desk Concerts・NPRのTiny Desk Concerts

The American public radio station National Public Radio (NPR) has a legendary music section. Led by Bob Boilan, a musician himself and a true music lover of all kinds, also a wonderfully warm personality, it has produced many entertaining and often educational programs. It also has brought many new and hidden talents to the light. I enjoy their programs regularly, from All Songs Considered (digest of music to hear now or under a certain topic/genre) to live concert streams and sneak peak listening of records to come out soon. They keep coming up with great projects, which I am sure to report more in future, and one of them is Tiny Desk Concerts.

アメリカの公共ラジオ局NPRには、伝説的といってもいいぐらい強力な音楽部門があります。チームを引っ張っているのは、心からの音楽愛好家で、とってもいい人さがにじみ出るボブ・ボイラン氏（自身も音楽活動をしているらしい）。かれこれ20年近く、聴き応えのある番組を発信したり、無名やうもれていた音楽家を世に送り出したりしてきました。All Songs Considered という音楽情報番組からコンサートのライブ中継、近日発売のアルバムを完全試聴させてくれるコーナーなどなど、おもしろいプロジェクトがいろいろあるので、これから順にポストしますね。まずは、Tiny Desk Concerts （訳すと、小さなデスクライブ、でしょうか？）。

It is a series of little concerts that take place behind or around Bob Boilan's desk. Because of the casual and spatially limited set-up, the performances are usually acoustic and drum-less. (Although, they could use a drum machine like Noah and the Whale did.) The vocal of the band says, "This is most peculiar this event. I hope we are not interrupting your work," because there are some people working right next to Adele blasting out a tremendous amount of sound waves, for example. How could they? I would just totally get immersed into the music if I were there (and I wish)!

ボイラン氏のデスクの後ろ（または周り）で行われる小さなライブの映像をインターネットで発信する、というコーナーです。もちろん、オープン・アクセス。（NPRのプログラムは、寄付や公共資金で運営しているので、基本無料で楽しめます。もし自分も何か提供したい場合は、それぞれの番組や局全体に寄付する形になります。）気楽な雰囲気と限られたスペースのため、アコースティックで、ドラム無しの演奏が多いのが特徴でしょうか。（なかには、上のNoah and the Whaleのように、ドラム・マシンを持ってくるバンドもいるようです。）「この企画は、ほんとにユニークですね。お仕事の邪魔になっていないといいのだけれど…。」と、ボーカルが気を使っているように、例えばアデーレが大量の音波を発散しているその横で、平然と仕事をしている人もいるとか。私だったら思い切りライブ楽しんじゃうけれどなあ。（そんな機会に恵まれてみたい!）

Because of the office background,  if you listen to it full screen on your monitor, it kind of feels like happening near your tiny desk! (By the way, the CDs on the Bob Boilan's bookshelves are not all what he owns, but only are the demos he is about to screen. Wow.) The performance is usually 3 song long and is perfect for refreshing. Personally, I get reset every time I hear East Harlem in this Beirut video.

背景のオフィスっぽさのおかげで、自分のモニターにいっぱいに引き伸ばして観ると、自分のオフィスでライブが行われているように感じられないこともない。（笑）（ところで、後ろの本棚に並んでいるCDは、ボイラン氏の全コレクションではもちろんなく、これからふるいにかける送られてきたデモらしいです。いつもこんなにあるんですね！）ライブはだいたい3曲構成なので、ちょっとした息抜きにピッタリです。例えば私なら、ベイルートのライブ（下）の最初の曲East Harlemを見ただけで、気分がリフレッシュします。



I have also found great musicians that I didn't know before, like the Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat.

Or seeing the tiny desk concert made me like some musicians that I wasn't really keen on before. Wilco is one of them (yeah, I know, I know, you can't believe I didn't like Wilco, but yeah that was the case, for a long time). That percussion really got me.

他にも、Wilco など、このライブを見てから好きになったバンドなどもあります。（Wilcoはアメリカではとても人気なので、えっ嫌いなの、とびっくりされるのですが、そうだったんです、長い間。）このパーカッションがたまらないですね。
