Aalto house・アアルトの家, Vol. 1

It was several years ago, just about this time of a year, when spring was sprung in the temperate countries in the northern hemisphere, like Japan and USA. In Helsinki, Finland, the shoes and rivers were still frozen. It was my first trip to Helsinki, and I had only a few days to explore; so I had to prioritize. But,  as a huge fan of the father of Finnish design Alvar Aalto, I could not miss visiting his house (which is kept as a private museum).

もう、３−４年前になりますが、ちょうど今頃にフィンランドを訪ねたことがあります。日本など北半球の温帯の国々が春を謳歌し始める頃、フィンランドの浜辺や川は凍っていたような．．．。初めてのヘルシンキ訪問、それもほんの数日間となると、的を絞って街を歩くことになります。それでも、スカンジナビア・デザインの巨匠のアアルト好きな私としては、彼の家を外すことはできません。


I was the only visitor for the hour, so they gave me a private tour and afterward let me explore on my own. (Yes!) He made the house when he was still a young and start-up architect in the area, which was considered a far end of the city (at that time), on a very tight budget. This house was his experiment, showcase, and grand collection of his motto to create something everyone can afford. He loved the place dearly and spent most of his life there, together with two much loved wives. It was a full life - you can feel it there in his house.

訪ねていくとその日はとてもすいていたので、独占ツアーをしてもらいました。彼がまだ若くて駆け出しの頃、当時はまだヘルシンキの果てにあたる場所で、安く一戸建てを造ろうといろんな工夫がされたとか。万人の手に届く暮らしをデザインする、そのモットーとスタイルの実験であり、見本であり、集大成でもあったこの家で、彼は人生の大半を過ごしました。二人の愛妻を得て、充実した人生だったようです。

このポストでは、スタジオ／仕事場部分を紹介します。



Aalto liked this corner of the house. His desk was permanently placed here - not in the office room.

アアルトはこのコーナーがお気に入りだったとか。彼の机は、事務所用の部屋でなくずっとこちらに置かれていたらしい。




Desks of his workers. The pictures were painted by Aalto. The upper floor was for the newbies. They had to start there by sharpening hundreds of pencils a day. (laugh)

弟子たちの机。飾ってあるのはアアルトの描いた絵。上の階は、一番の若手が鉛筆削りからはじめた場所らしい。（笑）



This room was supposed to be his office, but he didn't like it, apparently. Instead, his wife and fellow designer Aino used it.

ここは、アアルトのオフィスになるはずだった部屋。代わりに、妻でパートナーだったアイノさんが愛用していたらしい。



This is a secret door to the 2nd floor of the house. When he was too busy or overwhelmed, he would sneak out of the work place from this door to the balcony.

この扉は、隠れとびら。忙しすぎて逃げ出したいときはここからするりと二階のバルコニーに隠れ出たらしいです。



A collection of bits and pieces. Some were dug up during construction of the house, and others were taken up on trips to all over the world.

いろんな破片のコレクション。家を建てるときに出てきた物や、各国への旅行で拾ってきた物など。

Buckyballs・バッキーボール

I cannot believe it. The favorite desk toy of mine, as of many many others, had been discontinued. I lost mine somewhere, and now I cannot get it any longer, which makes me quite sad...

みんなに大人気のオフィス用オモチャ（というたぐいの小物が、アメリカなどではいろいろとあるのです）、バッキーボールが、製造・販売中止になってしまったそうです。私は、引っ越しの途中で失くしてしまったのですが、もう手に入らないのですね．．．。ああ、残念です。

Buckyballs, for those who did not have the chance to play with them, are small magnetic balls. That's it. But then they offer an infinite amount of fun, since you can do so much with it. You can make shapes of all kinds. If you are a nerdy biologist, you can make biological-looking structures, which resemble microtubules for example. Me? I would make a sheet and stretch it, saying in my mind "Membrane!" Yeah, fine, I am a nerd. (But then the membrane phospholipids are just like those magnets - they are attracting each other...)

バッキーボールを知らない方に何なのかをご説明しますと、単に小さな磁石のボールであります。それだけです。シンプルな商品ですが、それ故に限りなく楽しめてしまうのです。とにかくいろいろな形を作ることが出来ます。特に科学者（特に数学者・化学者・物理学者）ははまること間違いなしです。生物学者だって、簡単に生体内の構造体（例えば微小管）に似たものが出来たりするので、面白いのですよ。ちなみに私は平面体をつくって両側から引っ張り伸長させては「細胞膜〜！」と心の中でつぶやいておりました。はい、どうしようもない科学オタクです、わかっております。（細胞内の膜は、構造ユニットのリン脂質分子がちょうど磁石のように引かれ合ってできているのです。）

Apparently there are some incidents of people swallowing pieces of Buckyballs, and they are dangerous to swallow, since they are hard to come out the body and will interfere with medical exams (such as MRI). I guess it was enough reason to make the Consumer Agency nervous. Even still though, I wish I could get more of it while I could. It was a medium we could really get creative with....!

なんでも、バッキーボールの粒を飲み込んでしまうと、なかなか取り出せない上にMRIなどの検査に支障がでるとのこと。そのような事故が何件か発生した末、廃盤が決定したそうです。分からなくもないですが、ああ、手に入れられるうちにもっと買っておけば良かった、と後悔しています。本当に創造性を触発してくれるいい媒体だったのですよ。（注意： 日本ではまだ類似商品が手に入るようです。入手の際は、小さなお子さんなどからは遠ざけ、お気をつけてお遊びください。）

Make your gloves smart phone compatible・スマートフォン対応の手袋をつくる

It is cold. Freezing in fact. But your phone rings. Maybe an important call. But you don't want to take off your gloves. Well you can take your call with your favorite gloves on; you can modify them tiny bit to make them smart-phone compatible. Get a conductive thread (e.g. you can find on here) and saw something where the tips of index finger and thumb are.

寒いです。凍てつく寒さです。それでも、携帯が鳴ります。もしかしたら重要な電話かもしれない。でも、手袋を外すのには寒すぎる！そんなときに、お気に入りの手袋をつけたままでスマートフォンが使えるようにする工夫。手袋に導電糸で刺繍を少しするだけで良いのです。（導電糸はこちらなどで手に入ります。）

Of course there are many smart phone compatible gloves sold out there. So this is a solution for crafty minds and people who just love their non-conductive gloves so much. And below is a video on how you can do it. A tip is to cover the inner tip areas of the thumb and index finger parts as much as possible.

もちろん、スマートフォン用の導電手袋はたくさん売られているので、これは工作好きかお気に入りの手袋がどうしても手放せない人向けの対策です。作り方は下の動画でご覧ください（英語の解説のみですが、観るだけで何となく分かると思います）。ポイントとしては、親指と人差し指の先に出来るだけ広範囲に広がる縫い付けをした方がよいようです。
